Mastering Mentoring

This program will provide an online university-wide curriculum for researchers who are mentors and mentees by scaffolding the key skills and attributes required to develop effective and rewarding mentoring relationships. The program will take a two-stream approach with one stream focusing on upskilling mentors and the other on preparing mentees for mentorship.
This program is for:
- Mentors: senior faculty, junior faculty, postdoctoral students
- Mentees: postgraduate students, postdoctoral students, junior faculty
Advantages of using Mastering Mentoring
- Modular approach: short modules enable busy researchers to dip in and out of the program according to their needs.
- Real life examples and case studies: the program will include multidisciplinary examples, case studies, inspiring stories and video interviews representing a range of researchers from diverse disciplines and at different career stages.
- Personalisation: while researchers will be presented with lots of examples and scenarios, they will be encouraged to reflect on their own context. There will also be options built into the activities so that researchers can choose their own path through the content that fits best with their own context, whether that’s related to specific disciplines or national context.
- Downloadable conversation guides and reflective activities to establish effective meeting dynamics.
The program is approximately 3 hours per stream. There are 12 modules, 6 for mentors and 6 for mentees. Modules are approximately 30 minutes each.

- Audrey Murrell is a professor of business administration at the University of Pittsburgh. She serves on the executive board of the International Mentoring Association and her specialism is mentoring under-represented groups.
- Mike Snowden is a renowned researcher in mentoring and pedagogy at the University of Huddersfield. He is widely published in the field of mentoring and co-authored the 2018 book Mentorship, Leadership, and Research.
