Library Week is a time not only to reflect on the invaluable role that libraries play in our communities, but also to celebrate the librarians who dedicate their lives to nurturing a love of learning among us. This year, Sage Campus unveils a mosaic of stories from our team, each bearing testimony to the profound impact that libraries have had on their lives.

In an age where information is at our fingertips, the quiet strength and significance of libraries can sometimes be overlooked. Yet libraries play such an integral role in our communities.

We are a team bound by our love for learning and teaching, and our collective experiences at libraries have been truly transformative.

“I spent a lot of time at my local library as a kid, starting with story hours before I could read. In elementary school, I looked forward to the summer reading program every year. I’d wake up on summer mornings and get my reading time in so I could log more books—a morning ritual I still enjoy on weekends and holidays! I’m sure this influenced my decision to pursue a career in publishing.” – Melissa Crowley, Executive Marketing Manager

Engagement with our local libraries also led many of us to dream of a library career. Maria Pia Tissot, Senior Marketing Manager, recalls: “When I was 15, I volunteered for 6 months cleaning every single book in my town's library because I wanted to work in a library so much.

Libraries are also safe spaces for kids and adults alike – away from the troubles of home or school, and filled with ideas and stories. Rachel Crookes, Associate Director for Campus, used to volunteer in her school library, re-stocking the shelves at lunch time. “It was a safe haven from a school community that I didn't particularly enjoy being part of, and my happy place.”

Cultivating a love of reading is another role that libraries have in shaping us. Rachel highlights that it was through her library that she found books that became part of her core reading memory; including Turtle Diary by Russell Hoban, which inspired her to move to London, and The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien which gave her a love of short stories.

Maria, who grew up in Brazil, remembers that it was her school’s librarian who recommended she try Shakespeare for the first time, leading to a life-long passion for his works and the theatre.

By sharing our stories, we hope to inspire others to do the same, to acknowledge the role that libraries play in shaping our society, and to recognize the profound impact that librarians have on our individual journeys.

Library Week is not just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action, a collective acknowledgment of the importance of libraries and those who tend to them. By celebrating this week, we are ensuring that libraries and librarians remain valued, and that their mission of serving the public good perseveres through the ages.
